Two correlations currently exists for the estimation of the hydrogen index (HI) of crude oils. One is based on API gravity of stock tank oil and the other on the density of alkanes. the former will not describe the reduced HI ofgas condensate systems and the latter will overestimate the HI of heavy, aromatic crude oils. Both systems can be correlated with density andthe hydrogen:carbon ratio. The hydrogen: carbon ratio of the stock tank oil can be determined by measuring the NMR HI and density. The HI of the live oil can then be predicted from the formation volume factor and solution gas/oil ratio.
