The ~(st) Century nuclear power initiatives arernpromoting opportunities to develop and manufacture newrntypes of fuels. The AGR program, under the auspices of thernAdvanced Fuel Cycle Initiative (AFCI) includes the High-rnTemperature Gas Reactor (HTGR) as an important elementrnin the DOE’s program to revitalize nuclear power generation.rnHTGR technology will require high quality production andrnperformance of TRISO-coated particle fuel. This type ofrnfuel consists of UO or UCO kernels coated with variousrnlayers of low dense carbon, pyrolytic carbon and siliconerncarbide. Modern AGR design concepts require greaterrnretention of fission products within the TRISO coated fuel asrnwell as higher standards for fuel reliability than required ofrnfuel in earlier HTGR programs.
