Improved zirconium alloys have now been in use forrnPWR fuel rod cladding in the United States for five to tenrnyears. These alloys have demonstrated significantlyrnreduced corrosion and hydrogen pickup compared tornZircaloy- (Zry-). The alloys include “ZIRLOTM”rn(developed by Westinghouse) and “MTM” (developed byrnFRAMATOME). The extensive use of these alloys inrnrecent years, and the availability of publishedrnperformance data for these alloys, both necessitate andrnfacilitate updating the corrosion and hydrogen uptakernmodels in the United States Nuclear RegulatoryrnCommission’s (USNRC) fuel performance audit codernFRAPCON- to apply to cases involving these claddingrnalloys.
