When a loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) occursrnduring the operation of a pressurized-water reactorrn(PWR), the high-energy water and steam mixturernpulverizes insulation and erodes paint from surfaces in thernarea around the break, creating debris. During thernemergency-core-cooling system (ECCS) recirculation, therncirculating water washes and down erodes or corrodes therncontainer/pipe surfaces, thus creating more debris in thernform of latent dirt, corrosion/erosion products, fiber, loosernpaint, and other materials. Some of the debris may berneventually transported to and accumulated on the sumprnscreens of the ECCS pumps. The debris accumulation canrnincrease the differential pressure across the sump screenrnand may eventually block the flow of the cooling waterrninto the ECCS, thus resulting in ECCS failures.
