Stability and optimality of a layer oriented MCAO system

Layer-oriented is an implementation of the Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics (MCAO) concept. It is shown here, through a simplified analysis, that a layer-oriented system is stable. The turbulence correction achieved in closed loop is compared to that of other linear MCAO approaches and the conditions in which the layer-oriented scheme is optimal are discussed.
