Effect of Anodic Oxidation Treatment on Surface Properties of Pan-based Carbon Fiber

For a long time PAN-based carbon fiber were widely used as reinforcement in different polymer matrix, like epoxy resin, phenolic resin. But PAN-based fibers do not possess good wettability with resins, so they exhibit poor adhesive strength to matrix Therefore, they have to be sufficiently treated in order to provide good mechanical properties as composites. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of anodic oxidation treatment on surface properties of PAN-based carbon fiber. The surface chemical composition, surface morphology and surface free energy of carbon fibers was measured using XPS, AFM and contact angle measurement machine respectively for indicating the mechanism of anodic oxidation.
