摘要

Measurements have been performed in many different mines in South Africa at depths of up to 3351 m below surface. The data from many of the measurement sites has been revisited to determine the main causes of the observed variability. Case studies are investigated to illustrate the relationship of the stress state to the tectonic history. A number of well-known, as well as novel, stress measurement techniques have been applied. The data and measurement experiences permit constraints to be placed on the applicability of the various techniques.
