Aiming at developing a new design method for rockfill dams and other soil structures accounting for both peak and residual shear strengths of backfill and effects of particle size on the shear banding characteristics were studied. The post-peak relationships between the shear stress level R_n= (R- R_(residual))/ (R_(peak)-R_(residual))(R =σ_1/σ_3) and the shear deformation u_s of shear band obtained by the photogrametric method for a wide range of mean diameter D_(50) and uniformity coefficient U_c were evaluated by plane strain compression (PSC) tests. The effects of strain rate, confining pressure, moist conditions and specimen density were also evaluated. A normalized relationship between R_n and u_s/(D_(50))~(0.66), which is rather independent of D_(50), U_c, and the other factors examined, is presented.
