During disposal and treatment of municipal solid wastes and wastewaters significant amounts of greenhouse gases are released to the atmosphere contributing to global warming. Methane emission measurements were carried out at the municipal solid waste dumping sites of Delhi and Kanpur. Bhalsawa landfill site of Delhi emits 2370 tones of methane annually, while the landfill site at Kanpur the annual methane emission was 18800 tones. Measurements on methane emissions from Najafgarh drain, one of the most important municipal wastewater drains of Delhi, have shown very high fluxes during summer months. The yearly methane emission from this drain alone has been estimated to be 5350 tones.
