THE USE OF STATIC MIXERS IN FOAM APPLICATIONS ON EXTRUSION AND INJECTION MOLDING MACHINES TO IMPROVE HOMOGENEITY OF THE MELT STREAM

The use of static mixers is rapidly growing to include foamed applications in both injection molding and extrusion. This paper will discuss the advantages of using a static mixer in processing a range of material types. The advantages including those common in both foamed and non-foamed materials, as consistent color distribution with reduced pigment levels, and those specific to the processing of foamed materials, as improved distribution of blowing agents and consistent cell structure. A brief mention of the Koch SMR heat exchanger shows how heat removal can be combined with mixing of the melt stream.
