Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has been developed as a non-invasive method to assess O_2 delivery, O_2 consumption and blood flow, in diverse local muscle groups at rest and during exercise. The aim of this study was to investigate local O_2 consumption in exercising muscle by use of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Ten elite athletes of different sport items were tested in rest and during step incremental load exercise. Local variations of quadriceps muscles were investigated with our wireless NIRS blood oxygen monitor system. The results show that the changes of blood oxygen relate on the sport items, type of muscle, kinetic capacity et al. These results indicate that NIRS is a potential useful tool to detect local muscle oxygenation and blood flow profiles; therefore it might be easily applied for evaluating the effect of athletes training.
