Optimizing the conditions of growth of alpha-alumina during the thermal transformation of a transition alumina prepared by the sol-gel process allows us to obtain a hot-pressed alpha-alumina ceramic with low critical defect size, which presents mechanical characteristics significantly better than those of alumina ceramics obtained from conventional powders.
