The use of revetments, such as riprap, blocks and block mats, mattresses, in civil engineering practice is very common. The granular filter, and more recently the geotextile, is more or less a standard component of the revetment structure. There has been an increasng need in recent years for reliable information on design methodology and stability criteria of revetments exposed to wave and current action. The technical feasibility and dimensioning of protective structures can be actually determined on a more founded basis and supported by a better experience than in the past. The general principles of designing of revetments incorporating geotextiles are reviewed in this paper.
