The excess pore pressure profile due to a falling external pressure outside a granular deposit that is partially saturated may cause local fluidization phenomena. These lead to erosive processes that can be slowed down or even avoided when a permeable top load is aplied. The physical laws that govern the regime are investigated and design of the top load is presented in graphical form. Experimental resutls are shown that are compared to the calculated excess pore pressures and on the basis of the comparison reasonable estimates for the soil properties are obtained.
