A novel safety design approach was proposed based on self-disintegration of ordnance shells under water and furthermore self-disintegration modes of shells were analyzed for serious post-war UXO problem and defects in safety design of traditional underwater ammunitions at target terminal. A self-disintegration method of ammunition shell composed of honeycomb-shaped rigid frame and water-soluble polymer filling was proposed based on that delay failure modes and mechanisms of ammunition shells containing hydrophilic polymer materials were emphatically investigated, which provides an effective approach in solving serous UXO problems and theoretic reference for safety designs of underwater ammunitions in target terminals.
