INTRODUCTION Fossil plants in the early Early Permian (Asselian) have not been found in South China owing to the deposition of only marine strata. From the beginning of the middle Early Permian (Sakmarian), alternative marine-continental strata are sporadically distributed in the Jiangnan block, the Yangtze platform and on margins of the Kangdian massif, yielding a few fossil plants. From middlelate Early Permian (Artinskian), the paleogeographic features of South China considerably changed, which not only led to distinctive differentiation of the lithofacies of the Permian marine strata, but also caused the deposition of alternative marinecontinental coal-bearing strata during the late Early Permian to Late Permian from the east or northeast to the west, yielding rich Gigantopterids plants.
