INTRODUCTION Fusarium graminearum is the main pathogen associated with Fusarium head blight (FHB) on wheat. If infected, the grain yield will decrease, and quality losses can be severe. State and regionwide epidemics are known to occur during years with extended periods of warm, humid, wet weather prior to and during flowering. Also F. graminearum produces potent toxins such as trichotheeenes (deoxynivalenol, nivalenol, T-2 toxin) and zearalenone. These compounds, alone or in combination with other mycotoxins, have been implicated as the causative agents in many animal and human diseases. For example, deoxynivalenol (DON) can accumulate in animal and human bodies, causing teratogenic, neurotoxic, embryotoxic and immuno-suppressive effects (He et al., 2007; D'Mello et al., 1999).
