According to the recent Newsletter on Energy Efficiency and Related Matters, No. 8 published by Electrical & Mechanical Services Department, it was recommended the air-conditioned room temperature in summer be set to 25.5℃. It was admitted by E.M.S.D. that 25.5℃ might not be everyone's most preferred temperature, but it is a temperature that can save a substantial amount of energy. An estimation of a saving of around $1 billion in electricity expenditure annually can be related to an elevation of 1℃ of air-conditioned room temperature setting. The research team was of the opinion that 25.5℃ was not the key issue. Based on simulations using computational fluid dynamics, the research team designed a novel lamp/fan and it was proved that energy could be saved by elevating the indoor room temperature while occupants could still feel comfortable.
