Flame detection and releasing is an essential part of the overall deluge system for munitions plants. Thispresentation will outline how an optical flame detection and releasing system designed for the uniquedemands of ultra‐high‐speed applications for the munitions industry can help users obtain compliance toUFC 3‐600‐01 (Fire Protection Engineering For Facilities), NFPA 15 (Standard for Water Spray FixedSystems for Fire Protection), and NFPA 72 (National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code).In order to meet overall system response time requirements of these codes, it is necessary to select opticalflame detection technology that best matches the characteristics of the particular material of interest.The flame detection and releasing system must be capable of detecting an event and providing a signal tothe deluge system, which must respond in less than 100 milliseconds (mS) from the presentation of anenergy source at the detector to flow of water from the water spray nozzle.Det‐Tronics has been providing optical flame detection and releasing systems which have met the needsof the munitions industry for over 35 years. During this time, third‐party approval requirements havecontinuously evolved, and new codes have been established.To meet current codes and standards, Det‐Tronics has designed the EQ3780 high speed deluge module(“HSDM”), a new ancillary component of the Eagle Quantum Premier® (EQP) safety system. This moduleaccepts up to six (6) inputs from optical flame detectors such as the Det‐Tronics X5200 Ultraviolet/Infrared(UV/IR), X2200 Ultraviolet (UV) or X9800 Single Frequency Infrared (IR) detectors, as well as smoke andheat detectors.The HSDM provides up to six (6) outputs that are typically used to activate Factory Mutual (FM) approvedsolenoids that initiate pilot‐actuated deluge valves. A unique cascade output feature allows the output ofone HSDM to be connected to another HSDM, extending the system’s capability to activate multiplesolenoids with a single input. The HSDM is designed to respond to an input in 2mS and when combinedwith inputs from Det‐Tronics optical flame detectors, response times of less than 15mS can be achieved.In addition to providing an ultra‐high‐speed of response, Class A fault‐tolerant messaging is provided bythe HSDM to the EQP Safety System controller. Messaging includes information on alarm and fault status,as well as important internal functions. The EQP system utilizes the incoming priority messages tocommunicate to other modules, such as the Det‐Tronics input/output module (EDIO), which in turn canbe used to activate notification appliances, auto‐dialers, and other communication devices.A properly designed and third‐party listed flame detection and releasing system, which includes the Det‐Tronics EQP controller, optical flame detectors and the HSDM, can help users meet UFC and NFPA coderequirements for an ultra‐high‐speed water spray system.633
