PASSIVE SOLAR RESEARCH FACILITIES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA GRANITE MOUNTAINS RESERVE

This paper describes the design, construction, and operating experience of 4 passive solar buildings constituting the research facilities at the University of California Granite Mountains Reserve. The buildings are located at a remote site in the Granite Mountains of southeastern California at an elevation of 4200 ft. This location combines both cold winters and hot summers. The facility consists of a laboratory building, a residence building, and 2 small bedroom buildings, comprising 3040 ft/ of floor area. The laboratory building is heated with an unvented Trombe wall, and the 3 residence buildings are direct gain. The buildings were designed to require minimal of backup heating and cooling energy, and in fact they are presently operated without backup heating or cooling. Features of particular interest include: the special requirements of the remote site; the integration of a photovoltaic system into the building design to create completely stand-alone research facilities; the functions of the field station; the construction organization including volunteer labor.
