ENERGY ANALYSIS OF A NATIVE ALASKAN WINTER HOUSE

An attempt was made to characterize and model the traditional winter house of the coastal Native Alaskans. The house, which was common across the entire North American arctic, was a semi-subterranean, wood-framed, sod-covered dwelling with a subterranean entrance tunnel. All accounts of the winter houses describe an extremely warm indoor environment during the harsh arctic winter. By recreating the winter house, we can gain a better understanding of truly sustainable architecture.
