SUSTAINABLE DESIGN/BUILD: A CASE STUDY IN ARCHITECTURAL EDUCATION

During the summer of 1993 the Yestermorrow Design/Build School offered a course in sustainable design/build techniques. The two-week, intensive course was based on the premise that architects can have a more positive effect on our social, economic, and environmental future. The sustainable design/build course targeted architecture students who had completed at least one year of their professional education. A grant was received from the Graham Foundation for the Advanced Study of Fine Arts to invite professionals from across the country to give lectures and run workshops. Ten students from all parts of the country, with a range of backgrounds in design, construction, and the environment participated.rnThe course emphasized the importance of the connection between the hands-on building experience and the on-going design process. The students identified crucial linkages between buildings and the context for which they are created. Students were encouraged to incorporate creativity and innovation into this course work. The final outcome of the students' collaborative efforts was a design process that addressed a wide range of social and environmental issues -beyond standard design exercises.rnThis paper captures the intentions and results of this course and serves as an example for others seeking to engage the concepts of sustainability in architectural education.
