THE INTERPRETATION OF THE COLOR BROWN IN CASE OF CHINESE TEXTILE HISTORY

摘要

This article discusses about brownish colors and their histories according to ancient Chinese documentations and results of dyeing experiments. Emphasis is placed on the views of ancient Chinese cultural books on the origin of the Chinese character ' HE' and the natural dyeing technologies used in ancient China. At the end of this paper, a conclusion can be drawn that it is recognized that 'HE' has been used under the mixed color code of brown as early as the period from Yuan dynasty to Qing dynasty.
