Through analysis of ikat patterns in clothing of Tang Dynasty in Dunhuang Frescos and through investigation of the origin of ikat from the aspects of religious origin, of the ancient literature as well as of unearthed relics, the origin and the course of propagation of ikat was determined in this paper. Additionally, three kinds of ikat processes were also theoretically analyzed. Dunhuang is located in the west of Hexi Passage, the northwest border of ancient China, where the famous Silk Road runs through and stretches westward. Thanks to its special location, Dunhuang had played a crucial bridge role during cultural communication and exchanges between ancient China and the west world since Han Dynasty. It served as the trade center, goods stopover, as well as cultural exchange hub during ancient Sino -western communication.
