The surface of denim fabric has the possibility of becoming uneven after garment washing. A group of white and light color warp streaks forms what is usually called small snake'' pattern on the fabric surface. It affects the fabric'' s appearance and thus the aesthetics of apparel made from it. The main factor contributing to the formation of small snake'' pattern is the yarn residual torque particularly on weft yarns. In this paper, a new method of producing Nu-Torque™ weaving yarns on a modified ring spinning frame is introduced. 100% cotton Nu-Torque™ weaving yarns of linear density 84tex (7Ne) with different twist levels of 438, 396, 365, 333 and 313 (tpm) were produced. The results from the experiments show that the yarn snarling turns of the Nu-Torque™ weaving yarns were greatly reduced. 3/1 twill denim fabrics were designed and woven by a rapier loom using the Nu-Torque™ and conventional yarns as weft yarns. After washing, fabric properties and appearance were tested and evaluated. The test results show that the appearance of the denim fabrics improved significantly using the Nu-Torque™ yarns as weft yarns. In addition, the experimental results demonstrate that the small snake '' pattern'' of the fabric d ecreased with the reduction of weft yarn snarling.
