摘要

Many rapidly expanding urban areas of South Africa and Nigeria have large resident populations that are entirely dependent on public transport to effect trip making. However, within these urban areas there are wide disparities of personal wealth, which has contributed to the level of criminal activity that residents in these areas face. The extent of crime is so real that it has permeated into all sectors of urban society, including public transport systems. This paper assesses how criminal activity on public transport has impacted on personal mobility, using the cities of Lagos and Durban as a case study.
