We are investigating an innovative, membrane-based technology for the tratment of hazardous air pollutant (HAPs) and volatile organic compound (VOCs) emissions from air streams. Membrane biotreatment (MBT) involves gas-liquid extraction and biological destruction in separate membrane contactors. Contaminated air enters a separation/concentration (SC) membrane unit where pollutants are transferred from the air stream to a liquid absorbent. The absorbent then exits the SC unit and is pumped to a second membrane unit, where the pollutant is transferred through the membrane and degreded by a membrane-supported film of microorganisms.
