Surfactant flushing-based remediation of contaminated roundwater and soils is of increasing interest especially where nonaqueous phase liquids (NAPLs)are present since conventional pump-and-treat remediation is not very effective. TShe presence of separate phases of dense nonaqueous phase liquids (DNAPL, e.g., trichloroethylene (TCE) and the light nonaqueous phase liquids (LNAPL, e.g., toluene) has prompted the use of various ionic as well as nonionic surfactant to enhance the solubility of those contaminants, and thus, their mobility. TShe water that is collected has volatile organic compounds (VOCs), nonvolatile oils, alchols, polymers etc. in a micrllar solution. Water purification from contaminants and surfactant recycling are desirable. Steam or air stripping is highly problematic unless antifoaming agents are added. Pervaporation can be an effective one-step membrane process for recovering the VOCs and recycling the s urfacetant solution.
