A means of detecting the health-related status of anrnindividual using a nonintrusive passive assessment systemrnin their own living environment is required. A systemrnbased on the combination of outputs from two sets ofrnoptical sensor units and using a generic methodologyrncalled chromaticity has been used to assess the feasibilityrnof cost effective monitoring for domiciliary health care.rnValues derived from the sensor outputs are related tornparameters indicating activity and immobility. Thernactivity parameter is obtained from the outputs of threernspatially overlapping infra-red detectors and thernimmobility parameter from the time that an individualrnremains stationary at selected locations detected by arndifferent optical based unit. The system was calibratedrnand tested for artifacts via laboratory-based simulations ofrna living environment in order to interpret data collectedrnfrom systems at residential care facilities. The test resultsrnshow that the activity parameter increases with walkingrntime whilst that for immobility decreases.rnA methodology based upon chromatic processing hasrnbeen developed for compressing the large amount of datarnrecorded every second over extended periods so that thernwell-being of an individual may be observed from thernpattern of the compressed data.
