Water based processing of Lithium Ion Battery (LIB) anodes offers numerous advantages over the toxic solvent processes, such as cost reduction, performance enhancement and environmental friendly LIB manufacturing. Water based processing of LIB anodes is widely used for production of electrodes based on graphite. Nowadays, to further increase the capacity of anodes Si containing material is mixed with graphite, as Si offers theoretical capacities of an order of magnitude higher compared to the conventional graphite. However, the Si particles suffer from large volume changes during the Li intercalation and de-intercalation. Hence, the binder choice for this type of electrodes are of outmost importance. JSR has developed aqueous binders specifically for Si containing anodes. JSR has enhanced the SBR (Styrene Butadiene Rubber) polymer toughness and modified the SBR particle surface to increase the adhesion of the electrode to the current collector and between the active material particles in the electrode, suppressing the overall anode volume changes.
