Over the past 5 years, Dubin-Bloome Associatesrn(DBA) and Ross & Baruzzini, Inc. (R&B) have jointlyrnbeen working on a project to determine thernrelationship of the air conditioning load caused byrnbuilding lighting with time. Our effort has been fundedrnby the Electric Power Research Institute.rnAn initial literature search determined that the basisrnof existing calculation methods was data generatedrnby Mitalas in the 1950's for a very limited set ofrnexperiments. DBA and R&B then embarked on anrnexperimental program with National Institute ofrnStandards and Technology (formerly NationalrnBureau of Standards) to more fully investigaternvariables which might effect the load vs timernrelationship in present-day buildings. NIST has beenrnfunded by The Department of Energy (DOE) for theirrnportion of this effort.rnThis paper presents simulation results calculated byrnseveral programs, DOE 2, BLAST, Carrier's HAP andrnTrane's TRACE and MicroAXCESS. These arerncompared with test results generated by NIST. Arndiscussion of the simulation techniques and thernvariables which affect the simulation results isrnincluded for each of the programs.rnThe simulations show that four of the programs trackrnthe experimental results very closely. However, threernof these programs use the weighting factor methodrndeveloped by Mitalas. This method is not well suitedrnto simulation of the demand reduction strategiesrnproposed.
