Impulse Atomization (IA) is a single fluid technique for generating alloys or composite droplets of melts. There are three modes of operation in IA. The first is the generation of mono-disperse granules larger than 1mm. The second is the atomization of droplets with a narrow and controlled size distribution less than 1mm and finally the generation of monodisperse droplets less than 1mm. This last mode is currently still under development. Pilot scale testing of the former two modes will be discussed as well as the application of the technique to form spray deposits of ingots and strip. Finally, the microstructure of the solidified alloys will be related to the processing conditions of this atomization technique.
