Design and Implementation of Distributed DEVS Simulation in a Peer to Peer Network System

With the advent of inexpensive network systems and middleware programs, parallel and distributed discrete event simulations emerge as a possible solution for intensive simulation models. This paper introduces a DEVS modeling and simulation framework extended over a Peer- to- Peer (P2 P) network system. The JXTA project is a standard implementation of a P2 P network system proposed by Sun Microsystems, Inc. The combination of DEVS M&S and P2 P paradigm introduces a new distributed simulation approach, which is based on parallel DEVS formalism and P2 P message communication protocol. The new system (DEVS/ P2 P) consists of Autonomous Hierarchical Model Partitioning (AHMP), Automatic Model Deployment (AMD), Activator, Generic Simulator (GS). This system also introduces a customized new DEVS simulation protocol for the distributed simulation in which the peers solve the synchronization problem by themselves without involving a coordinator. Developing methodologies to measure the performances of the P2 P based simulations and to determine whether a P2 P based middleware approach is suitable for a given DEVS distributed simulation model could be topics for further research.
