This paper describes research carried out to develop and optimise a process to extract lithium from the processed waste of spent lithium batteries. Using a membrane electrolysis process, a solution of lithium salts can be used to produce a pure lithium hydroxide solution. From this, lithium carbonate is produced, the major precursor for other lithium chemicals and for new lihium batteries. Hence, the recycle loop can be closed.
