The history of nano-reinforcement in rubber industry and science is actually long. In this paper, the advance on research and application of all kinds of rubber nanocomposites has been summarized, for example, nano-powder reinforcing rubber, silica in-situ reinforcing rubber by sol-gel technique, unsaturated carboxyl metal in-situ reinforcing rubber, crosslinked carboxyl rubber by metal oxides, block type thermoplastic elastomer, layered silicate/rubber nanocomposite, nano-fibre/rubber composites, lignose nano-reinforcing rubber, carbon nano-tube reinforcing rubber, polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane reinforcing rubber, starch reinforcing rubber and so on. Correspondingly, nano-compounding technology, nano-phase forming technology, mechanical properties and functional performance of nanocomposites, anticipated and potential industry foreground, development routes, etc. are reviewed and assessed. The conclusions are made based on these researches that being nano-size is an important way, even the essential means for filler to produce excellent reinforcement to rubber and endow rubber composites with both high mechanical performance and expected functional property, when the dynamic and elastic properties are considered, strengthening interface of nanocomposites is still of importance, making particle size in nanometer level is prerequisite to develop new reinforcing agent. At last, some theoretical and practical issues are brought forward.
