Cable and hydraulic shovel simulators are developed in the ADAMS environment for excavation operations. The simulators allow complete characterization of the performance of shovel excavators. The same digging trajectory with three different time durations is used to illustrate the capability of the simulators and the associated power consumptions. It is found that a shortened digging time duration increases the power consumption required for the operation. Also, the total power consumption doubles when the digging time reduces by half for both shovels. The results also show that the peak power demand for the hydraulic shovel is 56.7% higher than that of the cable shovel and that the hydraulic shovel consumes 31.5% more energy than that of the cable shovel. This is an important decision factor in a shovel selection process, because the peak power demand and the overall power consumption affect the production costs.
