The capacity of single angle compression struts attached by one leg to chords of trusses requires evaluating a complex loading with uncertain end conditions. The Americal Institute of Steel Construction Specification for Load and Resistance Factor Design of Single Alngle Members (1994 gives the designer the tools to determine the strengh of single angles for any type of loading. SInce the basic loading is axial and the end conditions are similar for all such struts, the axial capacity will vary within a reasonable range. Design using the AISC LRFD specification and making simplifying assumptions on end restranint and load eccentricity may lead to very conservative predictions to those capacities. The simplified approaches that are examind represent an endeavor to obtain a reasonable axial capacity with a reduced amount of computation.
