A Database-Assisted Design Approach for the Assessment of Wind Induced Torsional Effects on Tall Buildings

The paper proposes a procedure for analyzing tall buildings subjected to wind loads and for calculating design functions directly usable for checking of structural members in a design office. The procedure takes into account the effect of non-coincidence between elastic and mass centers, in case the two do not coincide at any of the building’s floors, as well as the joint effect of the dependence upon direction of the extreme wind speeds, the aerodynamic pressures, and the dynamic response. The method makes use of electronic records of the pressures measured simultaneously in the wind tunnel, of directional wind speed data above open terrain in the region that includes the building site, and of ratios measured in the wind tunnel or obtained from accepted relations between directional wind speeds at standard elevation over open terrain and their counterparts at the top of the building. Once this input is available, the designer can obtain the calculation of the requisite design functions for member checking. The functions vary from member to member, and can be obtained for as many members as is required by using software developed by the authors. The software is available upon request.
