Session 3 Characterisation of Formations and Material Models

Within this discussion session, we cannot cover all the issues that emerged from the papers in the presentation. We have decided to structure our discussion giving some initial comments and then opening afterwards to your contributions. We have chosen two main characteristics of general soil behaviour that are important for geotechnical design. These are the stiffness, which is relevant when assessing serviceability limit states of structures, and strength, which comes into play when looking at ultimate limit states.
