SOLAR-LIKE OSCILLATIONS: LESSONS FROM GROUND-BASED OBSERVATIONS

Observations of solar-like oscillations are now being accumulated at a steady pace. We are now in a position to make solid statements about the properties of solar-like oscillations, and how well they agree with theoretical expectations. We discuss some conclusions that will be useful in designing space missions such as Eddington. In particular, the occurrence of mixed modes and avoided crossings in evolved stars make it important to have two-colour photometry to aid mode identification.
