Working Toward Zero Automotive Accidents in the Niger Delta

Oil and service companies have made massive efforts tornminimize the risks associated with driving in Nigeria. Despiternthese efforts, most companies still record major accidents,rnincluding fatalities. Recently, a major service companyrnimplemented an active journey management system that hasrnproved very effective in eliminating driving-related fatalitiesrnand accidents. The journey management system combinesrnspecific training, the use of driving monitors and risk-rewardrnschemes for all the drivers.rnMajor companies operating in Nigeria recognized thernexceptional driving performance record resulting from thisrnsystem in 2000. Subsequently, several companies initiated arncooperative program to implement the same journeyrnmanagement system. All participants observed a rapid drivingrnperformance improvement. The trend of the number andrnseverity of all categories of driving-related accidents from allrnparticipating companies is shown. It compares favorably withrnstatistics from other geographical areas and demonstrates thatrncommitment and leadership deliver results, even in the mostrndifficult conditions.
