‘Planting our Future’ with Neighbouring Communities – A National Energy Company Experience

As the National Energy Company of Trinidad and Tobago,rnPetrotrin is committed to the sustainable use of naturalrnresources and environmental protection and seeks to developrnand implement a proactive environmental outreach programmernwith our neighbouring communities.rnThe elements of Petrotrin’s Environmental Outreachrnprogrammes are:rn1) Implementation of a school beautification programme,rnwhich involved the distribution of plants to 25 selectedrnschools within the Company’s operational areas. Thernobjective of this is to increase environmental awarenessrnamong children while simultaneously promoting anrnaesthetically pleasing environment.rn2) Construction of a recreational facility and restoration ofrnthe Pointe-a-Pierre Beach adjacent to the island’s solernrefinery, for residents of the surrounding communities.rnThere is an absence of such facilities along a 70 kmrnstretch on the west coast of Trinidad. The projectrnincludes protection of the eroded coastline, and thernimprovement of the area aesthetically for use by thernpublic for recreational purposes. This facility is estimatedrnto cost over US$2,000,000, the majority of which will bernincurred in the construction of a concrete sea wall whichrnwill protect the restored beach from further erosion.rnPetrotrin recognizes the importance and numerousrnbenefits of fostering a harmonious relationship withrnour neighbours.rn3) Donation of twelve (12) Advanced GLOBE (GlobalrnLearning and Observations to Benefit the Environment)rnKits to secondary schools over the last three (3) years inrncommemoration of World Environment Day.rnDonations have also been given for the printing andrnpublication of a PAHO booklet “ Healthy Homes, HealthyrnCommunities” for primary school children.rn4) Participation by students of primary and secondaryrnschools in a Climate Change Essay Competition, whichrnwas aimed at increasing their knowledge on the effects ofrnClimate Change.rnPetrotrin’s Board of Directors and Management stand behindrnthis commitment, championing the company’s environmentalrnresponsibilities to provide a healthier living andrnworking community.
