Food handlers potentially represent a specific source ofrndisease transmission in a remote exploration and productionrnenvironment. Since a food borne epidemic can producernsignificant morbidity and lost time, it is critical to consider thernvarious sources of disease in the food procurement andrndelivery system. Food handlers, especially in remote locationsrnthat inherently have a substantial underlying disease burden,rnrequire special medical attention. A number of strategies existrnfor implementing medical surveillance programs for foodrnhandlers. This paper will include medical exam content andrnfrequency, immunizations, laboratory testing, presumptiverndisease treatment for parasitic infections, and return tornwork practices.
