An Integrated Water Resource Management System at Balikpapan Facility

The Manggar base in Balikpapan, Indonesia, one ofSchlumberger's largest facilities, provides a wide range ofservices to the oil and gas industry. Base operation requires alarge clean water supply and wastewater managementprogram that meets Schlumberger's and the Indonesiangovernment's regulatory environment requirements.Thechallenges that Schlumberger faced locally included aninsufficient clean water supply from the community, the lowqualityground water, and a sensitive coastal environment.Schlumberger established the facility in 2000 with theobjective of building an integrated water resourcemanagement system that met company and governmentalrequirements, and was architecturally environmental friendly.The solution consisted of building a large environmentallyfriendly water pond that takes advantage of the area'sabundant rainwater and integrated with a pretreatment waterfacility, closed-loop recyclable wastewater from washing bayand sewage treatment facility. Regular monitoring andperiodic environmental audits ensure the integrity of thesystem.The results have been rewardingthe working environment iscost effective and healthy. In 2003, Schlumberger received anhonorary 'Environment Excellence Award' from the state ofBalikpapan, the first ever awarded.
