Three years ago, VICO Indonesia made the decisionrnto minimize the environmental impact of oilyrnwastes from its drilling, workover completion, andrnproduction operations in East Kalimantan. Thernwaste consists of synthetic oil base mud cuttingsrnfrom drilling and work-over completion operationsrnand oily sludge from production operations.rnVICO Indonesia is now applying separation andrnland-farming bioremediation technology to achievernzero oily waste discharge in order to minimize thernenvironmental impact and maximize oil recovery.rnThe project is being implemented in several stages.rnThe first stage of the clean-up is to separate thernsludge or other oily solid waste from solid with lessrnoil content, oil, condensate, and other liquids. Asrnthe material has a high oil content or high totalrnpetroleum hydrocarbon, a secondary objective is tornmaximize oil recovery. The sludge is first separatedrnby gravity using newly built concrete pits. Using arncentrifuge, the oily solid is separated as oil, water,rnand oily solid. All oily solid waste from therncentrifuge is processed using land-farmingrnbioremediation. The oil and condensate is sent tornthe production process facility to be recycled. Thernwater coming from the pits is processed to meet therngovernment regulations and monitored using a biomonitoringrndynamic pit before being discharged tornthe environment or injected into disposal wells.rnThe second stage of the clean-up is to process thernsynthetic oily waste cutting from the drillingrnoperation and all oily solid waste from therncentrifuge using land farming bioremediationrntechnology at the Central Bioremediation Area.rnThis technology uses aerobic microbes to degradernthe toxic hydrocarbons to harmless end products.rnThe recycled waste is rendered as nontoxic topsoilrnfor in-house regreening.rnThe third stage of the project is to confirm thernremediation result. The pile of re-mediated soil hasrnbeen planted with a variety of vegetable and fruits.rnThe soil, vegetables, and fruits have been analyzedrnto validate the process and ensure there is norncontamination.rnThis process has zero cost as the cost of the servicernis offset by the value of the recycled oil. In additionrnapproximately $1,200,000 is saved compared torndisposing of the oily waste in commercial facilities.rnThe separation and land-farming bioremediationrntechnology is being successfully applied torneliminate oily waste in VICO Indonesia. All treatedrnwaste is within the limits as prescribed byrngovernment regulations.
