The collection of numerous and various data, coming from a long-term research in the river fan of the Murghab delta (Turkmenistan) (Fig. 1), in a multimedia GIS constitutes nowadays the fundamental tool to understand the fluctuation of settlement change in the southern region of Turkmenistan from Late Chalcolithic (at the end of the 4th mill. BC) up to the Mongolian invasion (1200 AD). We are concentrating on the settlement distribution relating to the ancient irrigation system evolution of the Murghab river before the modern building of Kara Kum canal. The combined support of digital archive data from GIS and the analysis of satellite imagery of the alluvial fan are leading us to understand the complex processes based on the settlement fluctuation into a virtual 3D reconstruction of the archaeological landscape.
