Superior Services, Inc. (Superior) in partnership with Toro Energy, Inc. (Toro) now provides DaimlerChrysIer with a renewable medium-Btu fuel from its Oak Ridge Landfill. This project was culminated through a concerted effort in the effective management of landfill gas (LFG) and the development of a beneficial use for the LFG. Superior purchased Oak Ridge Landfill, located southwest of St. Louis in Ballwin Missouri, in September of 1996. The landfill was in dire need of a comprehensive LFG control system due to the detection of LFG at perimeter gas probe locations. Gas system construction permits were expeditiously obtained through the cooperative efforts with State and County officials. The first portion of the interior gas system was installed in early 1997. A number of gas system additions followed including a perimeter leachate/gas collection trench and the installation of pneumatic pumps in select gas wells. These additions have proved to be successful in the control of LFG detection at perimeter probes. In early 1997, beneficial use of the LFG was also contemplated. These possible beneficial LFG uses included electrical generation and the direct use of LFG as a medium-Btu fuel by local industry. During this time, the DaimlerChrysIer St. Louis Assembly Plant complex was identified as a potential direct user of the LFG as boiler fuel. Toro Energy, Inc. (Toro) was selected in July of 1997 to complete detailed negotiations with DaimlerChrysIer to make the project a reality. Toro was to construct, own and operate a compressor station including a 4.5 project due to the environmental and economic benefits. These benefits included the reduction and control of Green House Gases (GHG) and emission reductions resulting from the displacement of fossil fuels while providing a fuel cost-saving opportunity.
