A colloidal route has been used to make zirconia tubes that were found to have excellent mechanical properties with strengths >500 MPa, surviving rapid heating conditions of 200℃/min to operating temperatures of 800℃. These tubes were put into a 200 tube solid oxide fuel cell(SOFC) reactor. The reactor was computer driven, allowing air/fuel gas flows to be adjusted according to temperature changes detected by the thermocouples. This paper describes the colloidal processing route, the testing of each tube and the performance of the 200 tube SOFC reactor. Thermal cycling experiments on the 200 tube stack are also reported.
