The application of photovoltaics (PV) into building as integrated building components has been paid more attention worldwide. The use of building-integrated PV (BIPV) is one of the fastest growing markets in these days. It is also very useful to produce electricity where a great proportion of energy is consumed; that is buildings. Of various forms of building integrations, the type of roof integration has some advantages in relation to solar access, safety, architectural aesthetics etc. For houses, there are various ways to apply PV into roof, depending on building types, structural characteristics and PV module types. It is very important for BIPV systems to consider the reduction of costs in relation to PV mounting into buildings as well as PV system itself. For successful PV application into houses various factors should be consider: structural simplicity, low cost of mounting systems and labour, structural strength, waterproofing, natural ventilation, easy maintenance and repairs, and the aesthetic appearance. Based on these design concepts this study suggested a prototype of solar roof integrated with PV for Korean houses. The paper explained the characteristics of this prototype of a superimposed PV solar roof applicable to existing buildings as well as new ones with various roof structures.
