The snow bound Northern Areas of Pakistan have acute shortage of energy resources. Due to the absence of road communication in these areas, the local population resorts to cutting trees for warming their houses that has resulted in massive deforestation and most of the mountains around the location have been denuded of trees. A hospital was constructed to provide basic facility at this far flung area and most of the patients arriving at the hospital were having breathing problems and exhaust fumes from kerosene oil were aggravating problems of patients. Solar energy was considered the most suitable alternative, permanent solution to reduce the gravity of problems. Method. Solar energy availability data was collected by daily consumer reports and temperature record while solar radiation intensity was recorded with lux-meter. The design was kept on directly heating of air to avoid freezing problems. The roof was converted in to direct solar absorbers of around 900 kw heat generation capacity with out storage and heat being provided directly to hospital space from the base of roof. The front 18 inches thick sandstone rock was converted in to rock-bed storage for one bad day. Results. Effective passive design of solar hospital has reduced the kerosene oil consumption and associated pollution oriented problems. In fact the patients are ready to live with out kerosene oil heater in the well-insulated hospital. Conclusion. Solar energy can be an excellent building heating system in these areas with solar load fraction of 80%.
